Olympic veteran Dave Hawkins set a new freshman record yesterday in the 100 yard breaststroke, and helped the freshman swim team down M.I.T., 40 to 35. Hawkins' time was 1:01.7. Ralph Zani '54 established the previous record of 1:05.6 in his freshman year.
The swimmers placed first in five of the nine events. Gus Johnson won the 50 yard freestyle, Ed Benton took the 100 yard backstroke. James Jorgensen won the 100 yard freestyle in 54 seconds flat, and Dick Plant captured the 150 yard individual medley.
