Athenaeum Picks Governing Board Members For Fall

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Members of the governing board of the Athenaeum were elected at a meeting last Sunday. They are: William W. Cancolmo '54, Peter R. Fisher '54, Frank I. Goodman '54, Mohammed A. Sheriff '54, James Robertson '54, Eric Klinger '54, and Miles Davis '54. The term of office is one semester.

At Sunday's session, the proposition that NATO be transformed into a federated state with a common defense and foreign policy was voted down. The chairman's vote was the deciding one. Athenaeum members, however, voted unanimously in favor of the affirmative's style of presentation.

Speaking for the affirmative side, Goodman claimed a Trans-Atlantic federation would swallow up purely European conflicts and guarantee, with American help, a satisfactory common defense pool.

Sheriff, speaking for the negative, called the question one concerning the mutual brotherhood of men, and not one concerning mutual security among nations. He suggested that a NATO-type of federation would preclude and peaceful resolution of Russian aggressions.
