Gerry Leads Harriers To Providence Upset

Hal Gerry recorded his first college cross country victory, and the first individual win by a Crimson harrier since 1951 as he led the varsity runners to a surprising 26-to-29 victory over Providence College at Franklin Field yesterday.

Gerry recorded a time of 20:40.0 minutes to nose out Chris Lahner of Providence, who took second in 21:08.0. Gerry's time established a new record at the recently-built course. Emil San Souci turned in his best Crimson performance to date with a third place time of 21:15.

The favored Providence team defeated powerful Army last week.

The Crimson freshmen also triumphed over the Providence Yearlings by a 21-to34 count, with Bill Morris and Dave McClean pounding to the first and second spots respectively.

Other varsity finishers included: sixth, Al Wills, 21:58; seventh, Hubic Maguire, 21:59; ninth, Frank Nahigian, 22:01.

Jim Cairns took fourth for the Yardlings, Dick Wharton finished sixth, and Phil Williams rounded out the Crimson scoring by placing eighth.
