Dickey Reaffirms Position Banning Red Instructors

Because members of the Communist Party are "committed to the use of deceit and deception as a matter of policy," they should not be allowed to teach, John S. Dickey, President of Dartmouth College, stated last night.

Dickey said that the events of the past six years have justified the position he took in 1947 of not knowingly appointing communists to academic posts. Higher education, he affirmed, will only prosper if it is carried on by men who have no need to take refuge behind the Fifth Amendment.

Meanwhile, nearly a thousand copies of Professor Wendell H. Furry's 285-page testimony before the House Un-American Activities Committee were distributed yesterday to the Faculty.
