Wesleyan First Opposition For Hobbled Soccer Team

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

A thin varsity soccer team, depleted by sickness and injury, opens its season this afternoon against a strong but undermanned Wesleyan squad. The game, rated a tossup, begins at 2 p.m. on the Business School field.

Outside right Bill Linglebach will be lest to the Crimson for at least a week and Mauriclo Toro, center forward, is a doubtful starter. Linglebach suffered a relapse of virus pneumonia, while Toro, whom Coach Bruce Munro considers his key playmaker, suffered a muscle injury to his left leg in a pick-up scrimmage with the Business School on Wednesday. In addition, many of the team members, including center half Stacy Homes, who did not dress for practice yester, are suffering from colds.

If Wesleyan, with four starters out with injuries, has an edge, it is in conditioning. Coach Hugh McCurdy's Cardinals began practice on September 8, a full three weeks before the Crimson. Today's game will be the third for the Wesmen, who defeated Brown 2 to 0 but were edged by the University of Massachusetts, 4 to 3.

Light Drill Yesterday

Munro put the Crimson through a light drill yesterday with no contact work. He worked on defense with Chuck Haddik, a halfback whom Munro is trying to convert to fullback. He was impressed enough with Haddik's progress to name him to today's starting lineup. Munro plans to start. Bill Cowperthwaite in place of Linglebach, but is counting on both Toro and Holmes at least to begin the game.

The Crimson lineup: ol, Godfrey Trustlow. il, Hank Holmes; cf, Mauricio Toro; ir, Dave Weiss or Bill Cowperthwaite; lhb, Carey McIntosh (C.); chb, Stacey Homes; rhb, Denny Little; fb, Hugh Sargent and Chuck Haddik; goal, Lindsay Fischer.
