Close political cooperation of the Western nations and continuation of their present policy "will maintain peace and stop Soviet lust for expansion," said James B. Conant, United States High Commissioner for Germany, on Saturday.

Speaking before 200 German merchants in Bremen, the President Emeritus of Harvard said that German-American relations, "which despite all obstacles have developed so favorably after the war will be even closer and more friendly during the years ahead, for genuine mutual understanding is an all-important necessity."

Conant expressed the hope that Germany and the United States would, in the future, "cooperate energetically and effectively as partners in a community of free nations for the benefit of the whole free world."
