Kamin Drive Faces Deficit Over $1,800

McCarthy Arrives as Trail For Contempt Draws Near

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

One day before Leon J. Kamin's trial for contempt of Congress, the Kamin Legal Aid Fund is still $1,800 short of meeting "the most modest estimates" of the cot of fighting his case.

Meanwhile, Senator Joseph R. McCarthy arrived in Boston last night. He said at the airport that he expected to confer today with Assistant District Attorney John M. Harrington, Jr.

The individuals interested in Kamin's case, however, are confident that the deficit will be met by "members of the Harvard community and Boston citizens," Richard L. Solomon, associate professor of Social Psychology, said yesterday.

Transcripts Costly

Estimates were driven upward over the weekend as Kamin's lawyers procured expensive transcripts of last week's trial of author Harvey O'Connor, also under indictment for refusing to answer questions before a subcommittee headed by Senator McCarthy.

McCarthy testified at O'Connor's trial and declared he had a right to ask whether O'Connor was a Communist at the time he wrote books placed in U.S. libraries abroad. O'Connor denied McCarthy's authority.

Solomon, who has led the fund-raising efforts for Kamin, had estimated a week ago that Kamin defense expenses would be at least $5,000. Since Kamin's indictment last December, the informal drive has netted over $3,200.
