A hole-in-one by Bruce Thurmond, two 70 stroke rounds on the same day by Captain Ted Cooney, and a decisive victory over powerful Williams in a practice match indicate the excellent potentialitic of this year's varsity golf team.
The Crimson golfers have been playing the 6,800-yard course at Pinehurst, N. C., during the spring vacation with gratifying results. "The team is much stronger this year, especially in the lower positions, because two sophomores, Jim Bailey and Bob Ornsteen, and a junior, Bob Stokes, have shown that they can outplay last year's lettermen," explained Cooney. "Forcing lettermen down one or two notches, as these men have done, improves the entire lineup," he added.
At present, the top eight men are Bailey, Cooney, Roger Fleishmann, Jim Jones, Bill McAllister, Ornsteen, Stokes, and Thurman.
The team, which compiled a record of seven wins, six losses, and one tie last year, has dropped several of the easier colleges from this year's 11-game schedule in favor of stronger opponents.
