Six Varsity Squads Will Compete Against Yale Tomorrow

An underdog varsity tennis team will play its final match of the season tomorrow on the Soldiers Field courts at 1:30 p.m. against a Yale squad that has won 11 out of 12 encounters.

Undefeated in league competition for two years, the powerful Blue has lost only to Miami, one of the finest squads in the country. Among its wins, Yale has defeated Presbyterian (5-4), Princeton (7-2), and Williams (9-0), all strong teams which have beaten the Crimson.

Though the varsity's record is 10-7, it has dropped but two matches to northern teams--Williams and Princeton. The Crimson has lost to North Carolina three times and to Presbyterian twice, while beating Pennsylvania, Dartmouth, Columbia, Brown, and Army by sizable margins.

Bill Cranston, the Blue's number one man, overcame Williams' Bill Cullen, New England Intercollegiate champion, Tuesday, 6-2, 6-4, and will be heavily favored to down the Crimson's Ham Gravem.

Both Dick Raskind and Al Englander, numbers two and three respectively, as juniors ranked among the first ten in the East. Raskind, who has won several titles around New York City, defeated the Epha' Wally Jensen, 6-4, 6-4, which was the same score Jensen beat the varsity's captain and number two man Alex Haegler, Englander will oppose Conrad Fischer in what should be a close match.

At four, Brooks Harris will meet Jules Cohen, while Maynard Canfield, who has been steadily improving, plays Sam English in the number five match. Dan Mayers opposes Eric Moore at six.

New England Intercollegiate doubles champions, Harris and Haegler, whose play has been outstanding, will face Cranston and Raskind in what should be one of the day's best and closest matches. At two, Ben Heckscher and Gravem will play Englander and Cohen, while Fischer and Mayers will face Ed Meyer and Moore in third doubles.
