Crimson Crushes Providence, 23-38

By William C. Sigal

Providence provided a bit stiffer competition for the varsity cross country team yesterday than did B.U. or M.I.T. last week, but nevertheless, the Crimson managed to finish its entire twelveman team before the Friars' fifth man crossed the finish line.

The final score found the varsity with 23 points, to Providence's 38, in the Franklin Park meet.

After the first mile and a half, the varsity race developed into the expected duel between the Crimson's Pete Reider, Dave Norris, and captain Dave McLean, and the Friars' Rod Boucher and Bill Hanlon for the top five positions.

Crimson ace Pete Reider sped into the lead on the first big hill, increased it gradually during the entire race, and won going away by more than 100 yards. His winning time of 20 minutes, 9.5 seconds was 18.5 seconds faster than his winning time in the triangular meet.

Boucher and Hanlon staged a personal duel for second place after both had moved ahead of Norris and McLean at the 1 1/2 mile mark. They could not gain on Reider, but maintained a wide margin over the trailing Crimson runners. Hanlon finally overtook his teammate to place second, with Boucher third.

Norris and McLean provided another duel for the first two and one-half miles, until the effects of a cold hampered the little captain. McLean eventually finished seventh. Sophomore Jim Schaeppi provided the surprise of the meet by challenging Norris until the final half-mile, when the big junior's finishing kick provided too much for him. Norris finished fourth, 80 yards ahead of Schlaeppi.
