Varsity, Yardling Harriers Meet in Trials With Tufts

The Crimson varsity track team, defending Heptagonal champions, opened its season with an informal time trial with the Tufts varsity in the Cage last night. At the same time, the Yardlings met the Jumbo freshmen. No scores were kept for either "meet" although times were recorded.

Performances ran generally poor, as compared with times of last year's preseason trials, although several varsity and freshman times augured well for later in the season.

Captain Dick Wharton turned in one of these excellent early-season times, as he won the 600 in 1:15.2. Although this is several seconds slower than his best time of last season, he will undoubtedly improve as the season progresses. Bill Morris turned in another good time in the 1000, winning in 2:18.1, less than four seconds slower than the varsity record for that event.

Ed Martin starred for the Yardlings, winning both the 600 and the 1000, both in good early season times. In the broad jump, sophomore Dave Gately jumped 20 feet, 5 1/2 inches to win the varsity competition, while freshman Pat Liles jumped 20 feet, 8 1/4 inches. Senior Hank Moore and freshman Dick Lee both jumped 5 feet 10 inches to win the high jump. Jim Doty won both the weight and shot for the varsity.
