Wharton Will Captain Varsity Track Team For 1956-'57 Season

Richard G. Wharton '57, of Roxbury, Mass., and Winthrop House was elected captain of next year's track team at a meeting of letter-winners yesterday afternoon.

Wharton, who was captain of the Yardling track team in his freshman year, is the heptagonal 440 champion. In addition, he runs the 220, and anchors the mile relay team. He is also a member of the cross country team.

In Saturday's meet with Yale, Wharton captured both the 440 and the 220. He also ran the anchor leg of the mile relay in a losing cause. During the past season, he was timed at 0:47.9, one-tenth of a second faster than the University quarter-mile record, but because he did not win the race, the record did not count. It is expected that he will break the University record of 0:48.0 some time next year.
