Owen Installed As Master of Winthrop In Gore Courtyard

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

David E. Owen, new master of Winthrop House, expressed hope at his installation yesterday that Winthrop would take the lead in the development of the houses as intellectual centers.

President Pusey installed Owen, a professor of History, in a Gore Hall courtyard ceremony last night. He is Winthrop's second master. Ronald M. Ferry '42, who retired last year, had been master since the House was founded 25 years ago.

Owen recalled the suspicions with which the house system was viewed at the time of its establishment, and declared that since then "the houses have more than justified themselves as social institutions."

Many unresolved problems still face the system, however, Owen noted, chief among these being the role of the house in the intellectual life of the University.
