Riesman, Jencks Talk At Sarah Lawrence

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

David Riesman '31, Ford Professor, led a panel discussion on the "behind the stove period facing the American woman" at Sarah Lawrence College Saturday. Christopher S. Jencks '58 was one of three speakers at the conference.

After an elaborate criticism of Radcliffe students, Jencks discussed the guilt professors at women's colleges must feel at seeing their most brilliant students drop their studies and become mothers instead.

Riesman countered with a parallel example of a biochemistry teacher who sees his most promising male student become a medical doctor.

The conference also touched upon the extent and importance of college education in a woman's preparation for future life. The speakers agreed, to a certain extent, that education was desirable.
