Crimson Tops Pennsylvania In Lacrosse

Injuries to three front-line performers and a Pennsylvania zone defense were insufficient to stop the varsity lacrosse teams last Saturday at Philadelphia, as the Crimson downed the Quakers 6 to 4. The win evened Harvard's Ivy League record at one win and one defeat.

Although the score was relatively low, the attackmen kept play at the Penn end of the field for a large part of the game. They were effective in blocking Quaker clearing efforts and played a deliberate offense, as the Philadelphians employed their zone defense against the Crimson for the first time.

A victory over Penn is usually nothing to get excited about, but the varsity showed a welcome reversal of form from the M.I.T. game last week. Coach Bruce Munro said that he was happier about the team's improvement than about the victory, which was more or less routine.

Jerry Pyle, who led the scoring with two goals, fired the Crimson's first goal into the nets at 8:25 of the first period, after taking a pass from Nick Lamont. Dick Parks and Lamont came through with unassisted goals during the second period to pull the varsity even with Penn at the half.

Dub Mallonee put the varsity ahead for good with 25 seconds remaining in the third period.

The Crimson took a 5-3 lead after three minutes of the fourth period when Pyle hit the nets after a pass from Fran Loewald. Penn drew to within one goal of the varsity midway through the period, but Dave Birch put the game on ice when he converted Parks' pass into a goal with only two minutes left in the game.
