Brooks Selected Swimming Coach

Subject to aproval by the Corporation and Board of the Overseers, William J. Brooks will become head coach of swimming next year, replacing Harold S. Ulen, who is retiring after this season, the CRIMSON learned yesterday.

Brooks, having been freshman coach since 1946, will move up to the varsity post at the beginning of the 1959-60 season. Ulen has been varsity coach for the past 35 years and is scheduled for retirement at the end of this season.

Thus far this year, however, Ulen has been ill and unable to coach the team in an active capacity. Brooks has been acting head coach during the interim, with former Crimson star Dave Hawkins '56 assisting with the freshman team.

Brooks was head coach at the University of Detroit from 1939 to 1946 before coming here to train the freshman squad. Prior to his tour at Detroit, Brooks was head coach at Rider College in New Jersey for ten years. In addition, he has been coach of the Bermuda Olympic teams of 1936, 1948, and 1952.

During his term at Rider, swimming was made a major sport on the strength of Brooks' record and it was one of the few small colleges successful enough to merit Ivy opposition. He had a similar record at Detroit and with the Crimson freshmen.
