The Heptagonal Meet has traditionally been a rough one for the Crimson cross country team, and this year's race was no exception. The squad took fourth place finishing behind Cornell, Army, and Princeton. Cornell's victory dethroned Army, who has been champion for the last three years.
As expected, Steve Machooka of Cornell finished first and set a new Heptagonal course record, bettering the old one by more than eleven seconds. Bobby Mack of Yale took second, as John Jones and Bill Staub of Army came in third and fourth.
Crimson Captain Mark Mullin finished eleventh in the fast race, only a minute and 18 seconds behind the record-setting pace of Machooka. Ed Hamlin took thirteenth, but Ed Meehan came in a disappointing twenty-third, as he was plagued by both stitch trouble and the dry heaves. If illness had not marred Meehan's effort, the squad would probably have been third, since Princeton topped them by only 12 points.
