HUPD Chief Says Harvard Yard Encampment is Peaceful, Defends Students’ Right to Protest
The young lady who defied the Boston Redevelopment Authority's requirement for an employee loyalty oath and disclaimer affidavit is now at the Summer School--before moving on to a new job.
Miss Beverly Meeker, a junior planner for the Authority, refused to sign the loyalty oath, required just last month, and so was forced to leave her position. A student at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, Miss Meeker is taking sociology and economics this summer for background in her career as a city planner.
The oath and questionnaire disclaiming membership in an organization advocating the overthrow of the government were suddenly required of all employees by the Authority's governing board. Only Miss Meeker refused to comply.
"The oath doesn't apply to the job," said Miss Meeker yesterday. "It does nothing to induce loyalty and only promotes suspicion."
