Democratic Party Chooses Beer To Help Reform State Activities

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Samuel H. Beer, professor of Government, was one of three professors asked by the Massachusetts Democratic party to help streamline party organization. Beer declined to comment last night on his appointment.

James MacGregor Burns of Williams College and Robert C. Wood of M.I.T. were also invited to serve on the research committee. All three have completed preliminary talks with Gerard F. Doherty '50, chairman of the state Democratic committee.

Doherty said yesterday that he would create the advisory group in about a week, with the consent of Gov. Endicott Peabody '42. It will have 10 to 15 members, including several state committeemen, and will probably be chaired by Doherty himself.

The group will consider ways of improving party conventions, registration drives, city and town committees, and campaign expenditures. It will hold regional meetings throughout the state, and report its recommendations to the state committee.

The new group will have the public approval of both Gov. Peabody and Sen. Edward M. Kennedy '54, according to Doherty.

While the committee is expected to be permanent, its first members will serve only one-year terms.
