Varsity Nine Will Tackle Weak-Hitting M.I.T. Today

The varsity baseball team looks for its tenth win of the season and its fourth in Greater Boston League play today when the squad journeys to M.I.T. for a 2:30 p.m. game.

The Engineers, never one of Massachusetts' greater baseball powers, have put together a 1-6 record so far this year, with perhaps the worst insult coming last Saturday when Bill Wicker of W.P.I. threw a no-hitter against them.

The Tech hitters have not been doing much this season--they've averaged less than two runs a game--and no one has been getting many tallies from Harvard this year. Against M.I.T., Coach Norm Shepard might start Lee Sargent, who beat B.U. 8-3 last Friday. Or he might give junior Kent Mitchell or sophomore John Scott some work. Both have been available for relief duty all season, but Crimson pitchers haven't needed any relief in the last four games.

M.I.T. has been relying on a pair of starters, Larry Calof and Jack Mazola, for its pitching. The hitters are paced by captain Don Alusic, a powerful first baseman, and Bill Graham, an outfielder.

The Crimson isn't expected to make any changes in the starting lineup, although shortstop Tim Bilodeau, who was injured on the vacation tour, should be back in the lineup soon.

This wekend Harvard moves back to Eastern League competition, with games scheduled against Princeton Friday and Columbia Saturday. The team's record, marred only by a 16-inning tie with Johns Hopkins, now stands at 9-0-1, with a 1-0 mark in the Eastern League and 1-0 in Greater Boston League play.
