Bernays Sends Udall Study On Mem Drive

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

A 14-page history of the Memorial Drive area was sent yesterday to Secretary of the Interior Stewart L. Udall, following up a request that he declare the Drive a national historical shrine.

The study, written by Charies W. Ellot II, professor of City and Regional Planning, was sent by Edward L. Bernays of the Citizens Emergency Committee to Save Memorial Drive to give Udall a basis for his decision.

If Udall declares the Drive a historical shrine, it will block the construction of three proposed underpasses, and halt the attempt to destroy the parkway and turn it into an expressway.

Ellot's study traces the history of the Charles River Basin from its discovery by Champlain in 1604 to its proximity to the future site of the Kennedy Memorial Library.
