The number of applications to Harvard has apparently leveled off after rising by 1500 in two years.
Fred L. Glimp '50, dean of admissions, said yesterday that his office received 3049 applications so far this year, only 16 more than the comparable figure for last fall. Last year a total of 6750 students applied for admission.
Glimp attributed the jump from about 5200 applications mainly to a 40 per cent increase in the size of high school graduating classes. Applications will show only a gentle upward trend in the next few years, he predicted.
"The likelihood of our being surprised this year by an unusually large spate of applications is small," Glimp said.
The admissions office will begin reading applicants' folders in mid-January and mail out acceptances April 16. The size of the entering class is not determined until March, but Glimp said that the Class of '70 would probably not be much larger than the 1211-man Class of '69.
