Talk, Concert Will Highlight Music Week

A world-famous violinist will lecture and a quartet of young musicians will perform here this week.

Joseph Szigiti will talk about his long friendship with Bela Bartok and play excerpts from their recordings at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in Paine Hall.

Tonight the Guarneri String Quartet will give a free concert at 8:30 p.m. in Sanders Theater, the second of the Summer School music series.

Szigeti met Bartok in the 1920's when he and the composer covered Europe in a concert tour.

He went on to introduce many of Bartok's works -- including a piece for violin, piano and clarinet which he played with Bartok and Benny Goodman.

The quartet, which took part in the Spoleto Festival in Italy earlier this summer, will perform Mozart's Quartet in B-flat Major, K. 589; Berg's Quartet Op. 3 and Dvorak's Quartet in A-flat Major, Op. 105. They will return here in August for two more concerts.
