Edmund M. Morgan '02, Royall Professor of Law, Emeritus, died Sunday in California. He was 87.

Morgan came to Harvard in 1925. He was Bussey Professor of Law from 1929 to 1938, and Royall Professor for 12 years until 1950, when he retired.

He served as Acting Dean of the Law School twice, in 1936-37 and from 1942 to 1945. In 1940, Morgan was president of the Association of American Law Schools. As one of the foremost experts on the law of evidence and procedure he served as a member of the advisory committee to the U.S. Supreme Court on Rules of Civil Procedure.

In 1965, Morgan received the American Bar Association Medal, the Association's highest honor.

John M. Maguire, also Royall Professor of Law Emeritus, said last night that Morgan had "amazingly friendly relations with students, but was a very demanding teacher in class. He never thought of his own interest or convenience, and never sacrificed any personal ideal."
