Sparked by 34 points by Don May, the University of Dayton, which way back in January defeated Harvard, 100-78, upset fourth-ranked North Carolina, 76-62, last night in the NCAA basketball semi-finals in Louisville, Kentucky.
The victory gave the Flyers the "privilege" of facing Lew Alcindor and his U.C.L.A. teammates in tonight's finals. The UClans crunched Houston in the semis, as Lynn Shackelford scored 22 points and the 7-foot-1 inch Alcindor added 19.
Dayton thus is in the unenviable position of being the only team between U.C.L.A. and a perfect 30-0 season. If U.C.L.A. wins, they will be the fourth major-college team in history to go through an undefeated season.
