Swimming Team Sinks Springfield

Sophomores Steve Krause and Mike Cahalan sparked the varsity swimming team to a 63-50 victory over Springfield College in the Linkletter Naratorium yesterday in the Crimson's first meet of the new season.

Krause was the meet's only double winner, as he stroked to easy triumphs in the 500 and 1000 yard freestyle events. Senior Bob Hughes provided depth for Harvard by capturing second behind Krause in the 500 and third in the 1000 yard freestyle.

Cahalan recorded a victory in the 50 yard freestyle and contributed a second in the 100 yard. Finishing ahead of Cahalan in the longer event was the Crimson's John Bragg, a senior.

A strong point for Harvard was, as expected, the diving competition. Standout Bill Murphy coasted to an easy victory in the one meter diving, racking up 249.7 points to outdistance runner-up teammate Dick Eisenberg by 70 points.

Murphy did not compete in the three meter event, but Eisenberg did and handily defeated Springfield's Bob Goldberg, 192.55 points to 148.20.

The Chiefs took the lead early in the meet, winning the 400 yard relay by five seconds despite a 50.1-second final leg by Harvard anchor man Bragg. The one-two finish by Krause and Hughes in the 1000 yard freestyle evened the score at 8-8, and thereafter Harvard steadily increased its lead by winning seven consecutive events.

Sophomore Toby Gerhart grabbed a first in the 200 yard freestyle to complete Harvard's sweep of first places in the five freestyle distances. Another sophomore, Dave Powlison, was the winner in the 200 yard individual medley. Harvard's other victor was sophomore Johnny Munk in the 200 meter butterfly, with captain Marty Chalfie netting a third.

The freshman meet was closer, as the Yardlings earned a 50-45 triumph. Highlighting the meet were double victories by Harvard's Al Ackerman and Dan Kobick. Ackerman netted easy firsts in both the 200 and the 500 yard freestyles, while Kobick gained his ten points in the 200 yard backstroke and the 200 yard individual medley.

As Coach Benn Merritt had predicted, depth was the Yardling's main problem. The Crimson took first in seven events, but took the top two spots only in the 200 yard breaststroke as Dave Law won, followed by Pete Mikhalevsky.

The score was tied until Dave Silver captured the one meter diving competition, and Harvard was never behind after that.
