Freshman Baseball Team Carries Undefeated Record to Yale Today

Harvard's freshman baseball team will try to keep its undefeated (12-0) record intact today as it takes on Yale in New Haven. Should the Yardlings succeed it will be the first time since 1900 that a Crimson freshman nine has gone undefeated and untied.

Cather Peter Varney and center fielder Bill Kelly will once again lead the Harvard attack. Each tallied a home run on Saturday to lead the team to a 12-2 victory over Holy Cross. Pete Bernhard, whose three-run home run in the ninth inning was the margin of victory over Tufts on May 4, will start at first base.

Pitching

Led by these three and backed by the strong pitching of J. C. Nickens, John Todd, Curt Tucker, and Phil Collins, the freshman season has been phenomenal. The squad has averaged almost ten runs a game while allowing its opponents only two. The fielding has been impeccable. The potent double-play combination of second baseman Chico Garcia and shortstop Dan Demichele has nipped several opposition rallies.

Nickens will be the starting pitcher tomorrow. He should have a fairly easy time. Yale is 6-3 this year and Nickens is generally considered one of the two best Yardling pitchers.

Left field will be filled by Larry Cetrulo, one of the team's leading hitters, and right by Brad Fenton, the leadoff batter. Power hitter Fran Saba will start at third base.

The varsity baseball team next year will be losing its infield and a couple of outfielders. The seniors on the squad include Carter Lord, team captain, and shortstop Jeff Grate. But with the freshmen coming up the Crimson nine will be solid next year.
