ROTC's ADDITION TO LIBERAL EDUCATION

To the Editors of the CRIMSON:

As a graduate of Harvard and of Harvard ROTC, I would like to say that I am very grateful to the College for providing me with the opportunity to earn my commission. And I think that service in the Army was an important part of my liberal arts education--for many of my classmates and for myself it was a unique opportunity to work with a cross section of our society far broader than is available in the rarified world of Harvard. It need hardly be added that the challenges and responsibilities of leadership and command are themselves part of a broad education, especially for those graduates bound for professional life.

Of course there are arguments against military service. But all that can fairly be said is that it is a matter of individual choice--let your conscience be your guide; let me be guided by my own. Richard A. Derham '62
