JV Soccer Team Starts Year With 7-0 Win Over Merrimack

"It's fun, and everybody gets a chance to play." said Udi Gupta, center forward for the varsity "R" soccer team, describing yesterday's 7-0 massacre of the Merrimack college varsity on Cumnock field.

The Crimson J. V., which has lost only one game in the last four seasons, completely dominated the play. Merrimack is fielding its first intercollegiate soccer team this season.

While the Merrimack defense bottled up the front of the net with sheer numbers of fullbacks and halfbacks, Harvard's wings easily moved the ball along the sidelines. Once in the deep corners, the Crimson's outside linemen spent the afternoon floating passes into the center or driving directly in for a shot.

Carrow Sets Pace

Harvard rushed to an early lead as right wing Jim Carrow scored twice on goalie Clark Leonard in the first seven minutes. Steve Orlins replaced Carrow at the right wing spot and immediately picked up the scoring habit as he tallied at 13:25 of the first period.

With the wind to their backs. Harvard's reserves continually harassed the Merrimack goalie in the second period but failed to score. Highlight of the period for the Merrimack offense was clearing the ball to midfield.

Harvard vs. Harvard

The only real competition in the game was between Harvard's first and second lines. Frank Jurado and Bob Litt tallied in the third period to move the reserves ahead 3-2. but left wing Bill Bellows scored twice in the final session to save the pride of the starters.

Bellow's first goal capitalized on the poor play of the Merrimack goalie, but his second was a single-handed effort, beating the right fullback and lofting a shot that cleared the outstretched hands of the goalie and dropped into the net.
