Alumni Booters Lose, Chiappa Scores Twice

By Eric Pope

Playing against the combined squad of the varsity and junior varsity soccer teams, and down by four goals after fifteen minutes, the Harvard Alumni team rallied to heights of former greatness before losing, 4-3, at the Business School Field on Saturday.

Before departing late in the first period, the varsity regulars took advantage of their better conditioning to pump in four quick goals. Felix Adedeji opened the varsity scoring, and Chris Papagianis concluded it with three goals in six minutes.

The Alumni fared better against the junior varsity, as Keith Chiappa '65 scored two goals shortly before the end of the half. Bruce DeTora '70 set up both plays. The final Alumni goal came on a penalty shot by Jim Saltonstall '67 in the third period.

"The vast majority of these guys are in good shape," freshman coach Dana Getchell said after the game. "They aren't just a bunch of stuffed shirts putting on the boots for one day."

The starting line consisted of Ahmed Yehia '69, Dick Nesto '71, Pete Bogovitch '71, DeTora and Chiappa. The halfbacks were Bezo Cutler '71, Chuck Okigwe '65 and Seamus Malin '62, who is the junior varsity coach. Langley Keyes '60 and David Clapp '64 were the starting 'fullbacks, and Richie Hammond '67 and John Adams '63 shared the goal-tending duties.

Solomon Gomez, captain of last year's team, was at the game, but he was doing his shooting from the sidelines with a 200 millimeter lens.
