Eli Booters Blank Freshmen; Blue Hustles, Harvard Lags

Yale's freshman soccer team shut out a lackluster Harvard squad yesterday in New Haven, 3-0. The Crimson freshmen had not lost to the Elis since 1958.

"I couldn't believe how flat we were," said Harvard coach Dana Getchell last night. "Balls just bounced off Harvard feet. We passed wildly, up the crowded center of the field instead of out to the wings. And we were always at least a step behind on stopping breaks and making tackles. Our players ran like they were wearing lead boots."

Yale, in contrast, hustled from the start. Chace Anderson hammered in the Elis' first score on a through pass from fellow inside Tom Sherrill just three minutes into the match. The quick conversion set the Crimson's spirit lagging.

"That first goal more or less wiped us out," Getchell said. "Steve Meade and Dan Potts, our captain, worked hard to salvage the game. But they got tired fast because they couldn't get any help from their teammates," Getchell added.

The Harvard attack botched two possible goals. A Blue back stole the ball in front of the nets from center Dragan Vujovic just after he trapped a through pass from Vinnie Vanderpool-Wallace. Later in the second quarter inside Frank Gerold missed a breakaway shot on the Yale goalie.

Yale's outstanding tandem insides Sherrill and Anderson took advantage of Harvard's sluggish defense by shooting or assisting for two more goals. Ten minutes into the second period Anderson passed between the Crimson halfbacks to Sherrill, who drove through to score. Shortly after the half Anderson made another assist, this time passing to Mike Georgieff.
