HUPD Chief Says Harvard Yard Encampment is Peaceful, Defends Students’ Right to Protest
A group of six Cambridge women will request tomorrow night that the Cambridge City Council endorse the People's Peace Treaty and make the treaty available at City Hall for interested citizens to sign.
Louise Bruyen, the Newton woman who walked to Washington to protest the war, and Jay Craven, a B.U. student who went to Vietnam last year to negotiate the treaty, will speak in favor of the proposal.
City councillor Barbara Ackerman said yesterday that the presentation of the treaty to the Council is part of a nationwide campaign to get local governments to endorse the treaty. Ackerman also urged interested citizens to come to City Hall tomorrow to support the order and sign the treaty.
The treaty, negotiated in North Vietnam last year by members of the National Student Association, calls for a total withdrawal of U.S. forces by a date to be publicly announced and an end for U.S. support of the current Saigon government.
It is possible but unlikely that the Peace Treaty motion will pass at the City Council. Last month the Council turned down a motion to remove the draft board office from City Hall. However last spring a motion condemning the war was favorably voted.
