Catherine D. Williston, associate dean of Radcliffe and Senior Tutor of North House, has been appointed dean of admissions at Radeliffe.
Williston, who will assume her new post July 1, replaces Harriet B. Belin. Belin, acting dean for the past year, said she plans to retire.
Williston's successor as senior tutor has not been decided.
Since all Radcliffe deans serve on the admissions board, Williston, associate dean since 1959, is familiar with the Radcliffe admissions process. She has been chairman of the board twice in recent years.
"The difference between chairman and dean is that the dean must coordinate both administrative duties and policy," Williston said.
Belin called her efforts as acting dean "merely a finger in the dike" until a new dean could be found.
In another appointment, Alice K. Smith, acting dean of the Radcliffe Institute, has been named dean. Smith succeeds the late Constance E. Smith, who served as dean until her death in November.
