HUPD Chief Says Harvard Yard Encampment is Peaceful, Defends Students’ Right to Protest
Two Cambridge policemen were injured last night in a scuffle that developed following the removal of an unidentified student from the Dudley House Sundance Mixer for not paying the entrance fee.
Easing Along
John K. Kidwell '73, a student collecting admission fees at the door of Lehman Hall, the dance site, said that when the student tried to "ease in without paying," Kidwell tried to pull him out of the hall.
A struggle occurred, and a University and a Cambridge policeman, hired for the Sundance, came to Kidwell's aid. A fracas developed between a crowd of students at the dance and the police, and six additional Cambridge police arrived. They dragged the student out of the hall, according to students at the dance.
The Sundance Kid Escapes
During continued fighting between students and Cambridge police, the unidentified student escaped into the crowd. One policeman suffered a bloody nose and another was hospitalized for X-rays of one hand.
