The Chicago Cubs prevented the New York Mets from winning the National League East pennant yesterday by capturing the first game of their doubleheader 1-0 on Ron Santo's run-scoring single with two out in the eighth inning. The Mets clinched a tie for the championship with a 9-2 victory in the second game.

The Pittsburgh Pirates and the St. Louis Cardinals both won yesterday to keep their hopes alive in the hottest pennant race in National League history.

The Pirates defeated and eliminated the Montreal Expos 10-2 while the Cardinals tripped the Philadelphia Phillies 3-1.

The Cubs' loss in the second game dashed their hopes in the pennant race.

The two teams will play a make-up doubleheader today in Chicago--with the Mets needing only one victory to clinch the crown.

The San Francisco Giants defeated the Cincinnati Reds yesterday 4-3 on Elias Sesa's four his pitching. Despite the loss to the Giants, the Reds clinched the National League West pennant title.
