Reality Shakes Harvard Sports

Every once in a while the fairy-tale world of Harvard sports approaches reality. Such was the case this week as Eric "End-Zone" Crone learned that he had been drafted in the last round by the St. Louis Cardinals as a possible professional running back, and two Harvard athletes, Dave Hynes and Dragan Vujovic, left the University for different personal reasons.

Crone, one of four Ivy League players drafted by the pros, was, according to his mother, "absolutely thrilled" by his selection. But the reality of professional football may be too harsh for Crone, as indeed Ivy football was for the quarterback who finished seventh in Ivy passing and broke the Harvard career interception mark.

For Vujovic and Hynes, academic reality brought about their departures. Vujovic, upon learning that his work in social sciences would not be acceptable in his native Yugoslavia, returned home to study law. The loss of Hynes, who left as a result of a plagiarized paper, will deprive the Crimson hockey team of its leading scorer (third all-time Harvard scorer) and an All-Ivy performer the last two years.
