The Public Service Commission's newly-announced deadlines apparently came as a surprise to the Advisory Committee on Shareholder Responsibility, and the ACSR is now trying to speed up its discussion on what to do about ACORN's request.
For the last month or so, sources say, the ACSR has been working on a letter to be sent to AP&L and the Public Service Commission, saying that Harvard wants AP&L to install "scrubbers" on the plant's smokestacks to reduce its sulfur dioxide emissions.
The letter, though not nearly all ACORN had hoped for, would probably carry weight both with the Public Service Commission, because of Harvard's prestige, and with AP&L, because Harvard is the largest single stockholder in Middle South Utilities Inc., the holding company that owns AP&L.
