Varsity Hockey Squad Smashes Tigers, 10-2

The Crimson varsity hockey team, completing a weekend sweep, demolished Princeton, 10-2, last Saturday at the Tigers Baker Rink to boost its Ivy League record to 8-0. The previous night Harvard edged Pennsylvania, 5-3, in Philadelphia.

Captain Randy Roth led the Crimson attack as Harvard returned to form at Princeton after an unimpressive performance against the Quakers. Roth earned two goals and two assists against Princeton and collected five points on the two-day swing.

The All-American senior moved into sixth place in Harvard career scoring, upping his point total to 127, four ahead of Dan DcMichele. Roth trails Steve Owen, who holds the fifth slot, by only nine points, and he stands 13 points behind Dave Hynes, who ranks fourth.

Seven different skaters scored to lift Harvard to its fifteenth ECAC win against one defeat. Steve Dagdigian, Kevin Burke and Randy Roth each tallied twice, while Dave Gauthier, Todd Nieland, Paul Haley and Leigh Hogan collected singles.

The Tigers never posed any threat as they registered their sixteenth consecutive loss to Harvard. The Crimson jumped ahead 3-0 before Princeton scored and Harvard held a two-goal lead at the end of the first period.

Three for Us, One for Them

Dagdigian picked up Harvard's first goal at 5:12 on a power play and Gauthier beat Princeton netminder. Mike O'Leary with a 20-footer from the right side at 11:31 Burke tallied lose than a minute later, but Princeton's Mark Stuckey answered back at 14:35 with a slapshot score from the top of the faceoff circle.

Harvard's skaters turned the game into a rout in the middle stanza, converting five times and shutting out the Tiger offense. Roth and Nieland each scored during power plays, while Haley and Hogan earned shorthanded goals. Roth collected his second goal with 49 seconds remaining in the period to give Harvard an 8-1 lead.

Ed Kuchar scored a token goal for the Tigers early in the third period and in the contest's final three minutes. Burke and Dagdigian each picked up their second tally. Senior defenseman Ed Rossi earned his fourth assist of the night on Burke's last goal, boosting his point total to 24.

O'Leary Blacks 23

Harvard netminder John Aiken played the entire game, making 17 saves. O'Leary blocked 23 shots in the first two periods before being replaced by Robin Rollefstad, who made 10 saves in the third stanza. The Crimson outshot the Tigers, 43-19.

Harvard now boasts an overall record of 17 wins and three losses while Princeton holds a dismal 5-10-2 mark.
