Cagers Seek to Break Losing Streak

Look for Revenge Against Brown

By Michael K. Savit

Two weeks ago in the IAB, the Crimson cagers fell just one point short of upsetting Brown and moving into at least temporary contention for the Ivy League title. Since that time, everything has been downhill for Harvard, which currently boasts a four-game losing streak.

While a win tonight in Providence against this same Brown team will not propel the Crimson back into the league race, it will at least provide a measure of revenge, and seriously hinder the Bruins dreams of an Ivy championship.

Brown, 13-9 overall, stands 8-2 in the Ivies, a record good enough for a second-place tie with Princeton. Penn stands in first at 9-1 and only a Harvard victory tonight, or some other unforeseen upset this weekend, stands in the way of Brown-Princeton and Brown-Penn confrontations next week to determine the Ivy champion.

Crimson Going Nowhere

The Crimson, on the other hand, with a 7-13 (4-5 in the Ivies) record, is going nowhere. Harvard, however, should still have plenty of incentive, as it will be trying to prove that it's a lot better which it is than its record or recent performances would indicate.

In order to beat the Bruins, Harvard will have to stop its star pivotman. Phil Brown, He leads the team in scoring, with a 16.7 average. In Brown's victories over Cornell and Columbia last weekend, he scored 49 points and grabbed 29 rebounds, and as a result was named co-Ivy Player of the Week and a member of this week's ECAC team.

Strong Supporting Cast

Brown's supporting cast is a strong one. Seniors Vaughan Clarke (12.0 scoring average). Jim Busam (10.9) and Eddie Morris (10.7) have played together for four years, and with the addition of strongman sophomore Brian Saunders, the Bruins have assembled a cast which may bring home an Ivy crown.

Following the game tonight in Providence, the Crimson travels to New Haven on Saturday night to oppose the Elis, the last team it was able to beat. The cagers then close out their season with contests next week versus Dartmouth, Columbia, and Cornell, teams which they have previously defeated this winter.
