HSA Will Produce 1975 Guide To Boston Bicentennial Festival

By Elizabeth A. Strode

The Harvard Student Agencies' "Boston 200 Official Bicentennial Guide Book" will be available to the public on April 18, to coincide with the beginning of Boston's bicentennial.

"The City is the Exhibit in 1975-76" is the theme behind Boston 200, and the guide book describes the "citygame" plan which is a network of historic sites, trails, markers, tours and exhibits created by the Office of the Boston Bicentennial (OBB). The guide also includes hints on getting settled in Boston and listings of restaurants, hotels, nightlife, cultural spots and day trips out of Boston.

OBB accepted the joint proposal by the BSA's publishing agency and E.P. Dutton. HSA's publishing house, in the fall of 1973. "The bidding was decided on the basis of whom Boston 200 thought would do the best job. "Steve Motenko '75, past manager of the HSA publishing agency said yesterday. "We put out a fairly convincing argument as we had change could will ads and edit primary research from our "Let's Go Europe."

Under the contract made with OBB, the HSA edited the primary research done by OBB while E.P. Dutton published the guide and did some of the marketing work. The HSA started working on the guide in April and finished last July 10.

The 320-page books will be available at the HSA for $1.50, but Boston 200 will do the main distribution of the 300,000 copies from MBTA stations and visitor information centers throughout Boston.

"I think it is an excellent book. Whether or not Boston 200 can distribute 300,000 of them depends on if they made an accurate prediction of the number of visitors and whether the visitors will want a guide book," Motenko said.

Sales from the guide should help the HSA's financial status as sales from "Let's Go Europe" are down this year with the decrease in travelling. Motenko said. If OBB decides to have a second annual guide book, the HSA has first priority to edit and publish the book.
