River, Quad House Committees Disagree Over Dues Collection

By David E. Beech and Mary E. Beim

A survey of House Committee chairmen yesterday showed that residents of the Quad are asked to pay House dues while students at River House are not.

The annual dues range from $2 per student at Currier House to $10 in one hall of North House.

A majority of the students in the Quad Houses pay the dues, House committee members at the Quad said yesterday. Over 50 per cent in Currier House contribute and up to 95 per cent pay in Moors Hall in North House.

Widespread

The collection of dues was once a "widespread practice" throughout the College, Archie C. Epps III, dean of students, said yesterday. However, he added that the practice has "lapsed" at the River Houses.

The dues supplement House committee funds which are used for specific House improvements and activities such as milk and cookies, barbecues, and House social events.

"We could charge dues, but we'd rather not," Meg G. Lesser '78, chairman of the Leverett House committee, said yesterday. "We'd rather get the money in other ways." Lesser added that a recent Leverett House mixer netted $460.

"Houses up at the Quad are less active," Peter J. Dugerian '77, co-chairman of the Adams House committee said yesterday. "They levy dues instead of having mixers and films."

But Quad House committee members find mixers at the Quad are not good fundraisers. "We tried a mixer two years ago, but we couldn't attract enough people to the Quad," Joseph Z. Michael '78, acting vice president of the North House committee said yesterday. "Maybe the image is changing now, but until this year a mixer was not even seriously considered."
