Edward J. King, Democratic nominee for governor, denied yesterday his Republican opponent's charge that he is an extremist and that he based his campaign on a "coalition of hate groups."

"I shall lay out my positions as I have and ask if they are extreme. I will speak to my voters and ask them if they consider themselves to be members of a hate group," King said at a headquarters news conference.

William I. Cowin, who is running for lieutenant governor on the Hatch ticket, defended the charge, saying Hatch referred to tactics which King allegedly employed in the recent Democratic primary between King and Gov. Michael Dukakis.
