Women Take to Courts Against B.C.

Harvard's women in white finished off their perfect fall season with a convincing 5-2 victory over BC last October and tomorrow afternoon they open the spring edition of women's tennis right where they left off--against the Boston College Eagles.

Last year's win over BC capped a season full of triumphs for the Crimson six--the first win ever over Tufts, the Greater Boston crown and the Massachusetts State champion title.

What's left for an encore when a team mainly composed of freshmen cops so many honors in their first season? Though the Ivy League title and the Seven Sisters trophy would make a delicious dessert, those accolades will probably take more time and a few more freshman transfusions.

Top Dog

Harvard has improved so much that they are now the top team in Massachusetts. However, Yale is still a league above the Crimson, and Princeton is head and shoulders above the Elis. In other words, if you thought the Tigers were awesome in squash, you ought to see their women's tennis team.

Princeton is not on Harvard's schedule this year and has not been for many years. The toughest contest the women face this season is their April 22 duel with Yale in New Haven. Two other Ivy teams, Penn and Dartmouth, will make the trip to Cambridge with the Big Green sporting a strong squad.

The starting six for the Crimson have not changed since the fall, except that Libby Pierpont has moved into the second slot ahead of Meg Meyer, who will be playing number three. Martha Roberts will continue to lead the charge with "lots of confidence," says Coach Peter Felske.

The elder Roberts, Sally, will play on the fourth court. Captain Katie Ditzler with her aggressive net game will perform at number five. Leslie Miller rounds out the line-up at six. Terry Clarke and Patty Wen should also see action.

As for doubles, the Roberts sisters form the top duo. Ditzler and Pierpont combine in the number two position, and Miller and Meyer compete at three.

The BC match begins at 3 p.m. today and, weather permitting, will be played outdoors on the Soldiers Field courts. The JV team, led by Lisa Greco and Marjorie Solomon will open its season against Simmons here at Harvard on Wednesday.
