Kathryn A. McCarthy yesterday resigned her posts of provost and senior vice-president of Tufts University. The resignation is effective immediately.

McCarthy said yesterday she disagrees "with the expansion of the university and the direction of that expansion."

Double Jeopardy

"The quality of Tufts is in jeopardy," she added last night. "Obviously the tuition increases are related to expansion, but the relationship between quality and expansion is my concern," she said.

McCarthy declined to elaborate on the type of expansion she objects to because she plans to meet soon with the Tufts board of trustees.
