Icewomen Fall to Cortland St.

6-1 Loss Drops Record to 6-9-1

What goes up must come down.

The women's hockey team, which earlier this year ran off a streak of six wins in eight contests, dropped its third game in a row Saturday afternoon, a 6-1 decision to Cortland State at Belmont Hill Arena.

Of course, running up against the hot network of Mary Ann Dewysocki and a team Crimson coach Joe Bertagna described as "better than any of the Ivy schools we've played" didn't help Harvard's cause.

"We actually played pretty well," Bertagna said yesterday, "but their goaltender pretty much stopped our offense."

Dewysocki and her teammates kept Harvard off the board until Lauren Norton banked a shot from the point off a Cortland State skate and into the net with less than ten minutes left to play for a power play goal.

Meanwhile, the Crimson gave three lessons in how not to start a period.

Carol Greenfield, on her way to a hat trick, started things off only 2:27 into the game when she stuffed the puck in from behind the net to give Cortland State a 1-0 lead.

Harvard stayed within range until period two, but Cortland's Nancy Owen broke the game open with two quickies. Owen took advantage of some loose play around the Crimson net 31 seconds into the stanza, then fired the puck past Nelia Worsley's glove side from about 20 feet to make the score 3-0.

Encore

Cortland State gave a repeat performance as the final session with goals at 2:33 and 3:08 before Norton, off assists from Huber and Fischer, finally put Harvard on the board. Greenfield finished the scoring and her three-goal performance with just under five minutes to play.
