Nautilus in Quad

Short Takes

By Christopher J. Georges

If the Quad Athletic Committee can raise $10,000, a Nautilus machine currently under-going repairs will move to the Quad Recreational Athletic Facility.

The equipment which was being stored in the Indoor Track and Tennis Building (ITT) was moved to the IAB on Wednesday, and it will remain there until the committee raises the necessary funds.

If the money is not raised, the IAB will keep the approximately $20,000 machine at no cost. If the committee does attain the funds, a new machine will be purchased for the IAB.

Members of the committee, made up of the House masters and the Athletic Secretaries of the three Quad Houses as well as university administrators, began negotiations with Radcliffe College Wednesday to try to secure the money.

The committee will also conduct negotiations with Harvard College, and if the money is raised, the Athletic Department will make up the approximately $10,000 difference, said Thomas A. Dingman '67, chairman of the committee and assistant dean of the College.

The QRAC must pay for the equipment since it is a House facility, while the IAB is open to the entire University, he added.

Quad residents complained that the University policy was inequitable, paying for facilities near the River but not near the Quad. Dr. Woodland J. Hastings, master of North House and a member of the committee, said.

"I think it's unfortunate that the Quad students do not get the privileges of the athletic department," he added, "and so long as the athletic department is not in charge of the QRAC they won't take care of it; it's an anomaly of the system."

Judith Y. Shields, Currier house committee chairman, said that these are "enough athletic people up here at the Quad for us to use the equipment."

"But," she added, "there still seems to be some reluctance on the part of the University to fund things at the Quad; if there is equipment at the ITT, there should be something up here."
