HUPD Chief Says Harvard Yard Encampment is Peaceful, Defends Students’ Right to Protest
Last weekend's Harvard High School Model United Nations was the most disruptive in the last five years, an official with the hotel where it was held charged yesterday.
Carol Nashe, a spokesman for the Boston Sheraton Hotel, said that a spate of false fire alarms allegedly pulled by delegates had disturbed guests and caused several to check out.
However, Harvard organizers of the event--which simulates the workings of the real U.N. for high school students--said that the disruptions did not interfere with the overall success of the conference.
James P. McGinnis '85, an official with the conference, said that participants generally learned a lot, and that only about one percent of the approximately 1400 delegates were responsible for any mischief.
Following an initial night of troubles on Thursday, McGinnis added, security measures taken by the organizers successfully prevented further mishap. This included a 50 member patrol of Harvard students to enforce an 11:15 p.m. curfew. The only other trouble after Thursday came when nine students were sent home for drinking.
Both Nashe and U.N. organizers said they expected the event to be held at the Sheraton next year, as it has for the last five years.
