To the Editors of the Crimson:

Responsible college newspapers should not print articles that are offensive of in bad taste. You did. Paul L. Choi and Clark J. Freshman's "Stanford Who?" (12/5/83) conveys a brand of sarcasm and "wit" that I find very distasteful.

It is one thing to poke fun at other universities, but quite another to call college presidents illiterate. Although the intent may have been humorous, that was not the impression I received.

Statements such as "College presidents are losers," are funny only because of their idiocy. If I said "Derek Bok is a penisface," people would laugh. This fact, however, does not mean that statement is fit to publish. Respectable newspapers make a distinction between what is fit to publish and what is not, You did not.

My past experience with you newspaper has been one of great respect. I hope that "Stanford Who?" reflects only a temporary lowering of your previously high standards. Michael Thomas '87
