Allard Socks Pair of Home, Rims, But Batmen Split Columbia Twinbill

By Mike Knoster

Most baseball squads would be satisfied after winning three out of four games. She capturing these of four weekend contests didn't satisfy Harvard, which spilt a twinbill with Columbia yesterday at Soldier Field after sweeping Penn Saturday.

"It's good," Captain Brad Bauer said. "But if we want to win the leagues, we've got to win four our of four."

The league is the Eastern Intercollegiate Baseball League (EIBL) in which the Crimson now holds a 5-2-1 record. But with Dartmouth sailing along at 6-0-0 in the league and victors in nine of its last 10 contests overall, the batsmen can't afford to fall too use for behind. Columbia, which entered yesterdays action with a 3-9-0 league mark. Is the sort of team that a pretender to the EIBL, championship most bent up on.

Columbia harrier Kurt Lundgren, however, had other ideas. Lundgren tossed a three-hitter in the opener, with a Don Allard solo shot in the fifth producing Harvard's only run. By then the Lions had already left the Crimson far behind, blasting their way to four first-inning runs. Two more tallies in the fifth and three scored in the seventh completed the runaway.

Gene Larkin led the Columbia charge. After going 0-6 Saturday at Dartmouth, Larkin came back with a blast. The Lion third baseman went nine-for-nine with a homer three doubles and five RBIs on the day.

The Crimson's Afford smashed a gopher ball in each game and connected for two doubles in the nightcap, when the rest of the Harvard bats emerged form hibernation.

It all started when Bruce Weller led off the first losing with a walk, one of five he drew on the day. Elliot Rivera's sacrifice bunt turned into a bunt single, and another bunt from Brad Bauer moved both runners over. One out later, Vinnie Martelli grounded the ball up the middle for an infield single to score Weller. Allard dropped a double in front of diving right fielder Glen Mayors, bringing home Rivera and Martelli. Michay Maspons singled off second becomes Frank Antonelli's glove to score Allard, and Harvard held a 4-0 advantage.

The next issuing was vintage Crimson baseball, with Coach Alex Nahigian's crew stretching out one hit for three runs. Scott Vierra drove a leadoff single to left. Bruce Weller got on when a fielder's choice throw to second was too late to get the speeding Vierra. Rivera bunted the runners over and Bauer walked to load the bases. Then Ed Farrell hobbled pitcher Bob Flock with a comebacker off Flock's leg. Flock fielded the rebound, but his throw to the plate was wild and Vierra and Weller scored. Martelli brought Bauer home on a sacrifice fly.

THE NOTEBOOK: Harvard takes a break from EIBL competition tomorrow when it hosts Greater Boston League for Boston College. The Crimson grounded the eagles, 14-3, earlier this year.
