John McGeehan threw for 222 yards and three touchdowns to lead the University of Pennsylvania to a 34-21 victory over Yale in Pennsylvania.
McGeehan's touchdown tosses--two of which went to Steve Ortman--marred an otherwise fine performance from Yale in the 1000th footbal game in Eli history.
The Quakers scored on their first play from scrimmage when the talented Penn quarterback connected on a 72-yard bomb to Jim O'Toole. They added a two-yard pass from McGeehan to Ortman and a 36-yard field goal by Tom Murphy to take a 17-0 lead with 12 18 left in the half.
But the Elis mounted a comeback. A two-yard run by Dave Kline and a two-point conversion by Mike Luzzi brought Yale to within three (24-21) with 6:14 remaining.
The Quakers, however, recovered the ensuing onside kick, and added a field goal and last-minute touchdown to move to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the Ivies.
Penn remained tied with Harvard for first in the league.
Yale dropped to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the league.
